May we have the compassion of Jesus for all those who are poor, brokenhearted, captive, blind and downtrodden through abortion.
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, he has appointed me to proclaim good news to the poor; he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted and to announce that captives shall be released and the blind shall see, that the downtrodden shall be freed from the oppressors, and that God is ready to show favour to all who come to him.” (Luke 4:18-19 TPT)
Jesus began his public ministry by reading out the above words from a scroll in a synagogue. He was quoting the Old Testament prophet Isaiah who wrote down the words (found at Isaiah 61:1-2a) 700 years earlier. Jesus demonstrated these words in his life and ministry. Now he sends us into the world to be his heart, hands and feet to a needy world – needy physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Today, I want to focus on those who are needy because of the practice of abortion. And there are many. Surely, we are called and sent to minister the compassion of Jesus to them all.
Who are the poor? Certainly, the unborn whose lives are lost through abortion. That’s an estimated 100,000 in Australia each year. That would be unthinkable if it were through war or disease. It should be also for the taking of innocent lives through abortion. Jesus spoke out about injustice and so should we. Praise God for the good news that the younger generation are becoming more pro-life as they awaken to the fact that one-quarter of their generation are missing!
Who are the brokenhearted? Certainly, women whose babies have been aborted. Post-abortion grief and trauma is very real. For some the initial response may be relief, but later comes the regret and pain. Anne Lastman reflects on 17 years of listening to over 1,500 women who chose abortion in her book “Redeeming Grief: Abortion and Its Pain”. Jesus offers healing to them and so should we. Praise God for Pregnancy Help Centres who are providing restorative hope to many who were considering abortion.
Who are the captives? Certainly, the mother who is coerced by partners or parents or even doctors into having an abortion. I, personally, have heard many heartbreaking stories from such women. An August 2018 Galaxy poll showed that 26% of Queenslanders know one or more women who have been coerced into having an abortion. Jesus knows that they were backed into a corner and lovingly assures them “I understand” and so should we. Praise God for those who have found release and are speaking out boldly about such personal experiences.
Who are the blind? Certainly, the abortionists and workers in this industry; those vocal activists for women’s rights shouting “My Body; My Choice”; female politicians who have succumbed to the agenda of Emily’s List. They are not the enemy but rather they are blinded by the enemy (see 2 Corinthians 4:4). Jesus loves them just as much as he loves us and so should we. Praise God that we can pray a blessing upon them and that their eyes will see, in Jesus’ Name.
Who are the downtrodden? Certainly, men who find they have no rights as fathers regarding the abortion of their baby; men who have been led to believe they cannot have a say in the abortion debate; men who through shame are silent about their post-abortive grief. Jesus calls them to be free and take their roles as providers and protectors and so should we. Praise God for men who are fighting the battle zealously as leaders of organisations, politicians and pastors.
Jesus, forgive us for not following your call into a broken world. We repent and ask for the power of the Holy Spirit to help us to be your heart, hands and feet to hurting people – especially those hurting from abortion. Please use every means possible to bring healing and restoration to them.
Please protect babies, mothers, fathers, grandparents, siblings, medical staff and others in the future. Please hear our fervent prayers against the abhorrent Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018 to be debated, and most likely voted on, this coming week in the Queensland Parliament. We declare together across Australia: THIS BILL WILL NOT PASS IN JESUS’ NAME. Amen.

The Return Attempt on Abortion Decriminalisation
This coming week, starting 16th October, the Termination of Pregnancy Bill 2018 will be debated in Queensland Parliament. We only have one house, so it might mean the Bill becomes law this week!
The amazing thing was that just a few days before a similar threat last year, people all around Australia prayed regarding this on the National Day of Prayer & Fasting 2017. And a miracle took place 😊

Many thousands have been actively speaking out in various ways. There is still time to do that by sending an email to your QLD MP or all QLD MPs at once (we suggest you use www.family.org.au/email-politicians) but if that doesn’t work for you, use www.acl.org.au/jackietradbill)
Even though 78% of submissions to the Parliamentary Committee were against the proposed Bill, their report issued on 5th October stated that they found that this Bill should be passed and all members should be given a conscience vote.
Therefore this is ultimately a spiritual issue to be fought with spiritual weapons. We do believe it is prayer that makes the final difference. Please pray as the Lord leads you over the next few days.
